Based on a 2004 report by previous business analyst and existing Google personnel Danny Sullivan, the phrase "search engine marketing" likely came into use in 1997. Sullivan credits Website positioning practitioner Bruce Clay as one of the initial individuals to popularize the phrase.[6]
